Héctor Ceballos-Lascuráin is an expert in the planning and development of sustainable tourism, ecotourism, park management, and environmentally-friendly architectural design, with worldwide experience and recognition in these fields. He has carried out consultancy and research work in 74 countries around the planet, including physical planning and low-impact architectural projects for ecotourism, sustainable tourism facilities, and housing developments, collaborating with governments, NGOs and private firms in those countries, as well as international institutions such as UNDP, UNEP, FAO, World Bank, OAS, World Tourism Organization, IUCN, WWF, US-AID, IDB, TIES, PATA, NAFTA, Conservation International, National Geographic Society, German Technical Cooperation Agency and a host of others. "Ecotourism is environmentally responsible travel and visitation to relatively undisturbed natural areas, in order to enjoy and appreciate nature (and any accompanying cultural features - both past and present) that promotes conservation, has low negative visitor impact, and provides for beneficially active socio-economic involvement of local populations". Héctor Ceballos-Lascuráin has been an "ecotourist" since his early childhood in Mexico. In the 1950s and 1960s he began traveling all around his home country, in the company of his parents and his sister, getting to know and admiring the many natural and cultural heritage features of Mexico.

TASTE3, presented by Robert Mondavi Winery

Robert Mondavi Winery’s annual Taste3 conference, held in Napa Valley July 17-19, featured a whirlwind two days of thought-provoking and inspiring presentations on sustainability, personal responsibility and creativity in the areas of food, wine and art. Leading innovators and activists from around the world gathered at Taste3 to share their work and experiences with a rapt audience of more than 350 professionals and enthusiastic food, wine and art lovers. Attendees emerged from the experience inspired and enriched by what they had heard, seen and tasted.
Robert Mondavi Winery created Taste3 as a way to honor and build on founder Robert Mondavi’s legacy of fostering a spirit of community and innovation around wine, food and art. “It was illuminating and unique!” said Margrit Mondavi, the winery’s vice president of cultural affairs. “We had all these creative, energized people bringing their ideas and talents together—my husband would have loved it.” The next Taste3 conference is scheduled for May 31-June 2, 2009. More information is available at www.taste3.com.
IRHA would like to congratulate Taste3 on a fantastic third year! Thank you to the Robert Mondavi Winery, attendees and speakers for contributing to the Robert Mondavi Tribute that will be shown at the 2008 Irhas gala ceremony in November.

Judging Process
The IRHA Advisory Board collaborates with International Hospitality Awards, Inc. in the creation of category review guides for each subcategory. IRHA conducts research annually in each category field by searching the web, magazines, travel guides and ratings directories, speaking with experts, attending industry expos and events and coordinating travel and dining excursions. All submissions are then prescreened using the guides without regard to any commercial affiliation between any members of the IRHA community including sponsors, media partners, founders or Board members. Decisions are based on each subcategory review guide, value, quality of experience and interest to travel and dining enthusiasts.
Judges rate each submission from one to twenty (one being the lowest, twenty being the highest) using their professional background and the category review guides created by the IRHA Advisory Board. The scores are tallied and recipients are announced in each subcategory. The first, second and third place restaurants and hotels are the highest scoring submissions in each subcategory.
All participating hotels and restaurants are considered for citywide, countrywide and worldwide recognition. The top scoring citywide recipients move onto countrywide recognition. Countrywide recipients will be considered with all first place subcategory recipients for the coveted titles of:
International Value Hotel of the Year
International Moderate Hotel of the Year
International Luxury Hotel of the Year
International Value Restaurant of the Year
International Moderate Restaurant of the Year
International Luxury Restaurant of the Year
